連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第88回です。大寒波に襲われたアメリカ・テキサス州で、海水の温度があまりに低くなったため、命の危機に瀕しているウミガメを救おうと、たくさんの人が働いています。その活動を紹介したニュースを聴いて、関連表現を学んでいきましょう。

アメリカ各地が大寒波に襲われています。特にテキサス州は非常事態宣言が出るほどで、大規模停電のため亡くなった方々もいます。動物たちにも影響は及び、テキサス州南部沖のサウスパドレ島では、寒さのために動けなくなったウミガメが何千匹も救出されました。カメの保護活動を行っている団体「Sea Turtle, Inc ：シータートル」の事務局長であるウエンディさんの話を中心にニュースの一部を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

NPO団体である「シータートル」では、これまでの活動の中で、ヒレを失ったカメや病気のカメを保護してきました。今回の寒波では、多くのカメを保護したために施設は満杯です。電気が戻らなければ、多くのカメが助からないかもしれないという瀬戸際にいるというニュースの続きを聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

And it’s not just new rescues in danger, residents at the nonprofit, like Merry Christmas, Allison–The first sea turtle to ever have a prosthetic after losing three （　10　）, and Hang Ten, dry docked to warm them up.　危険なのは新たにレスキューされたカメだけではない。NPOが保護しているカメたち、メリークリスマスやアリソンもこのままでは危ない。アリソンは、3本のヒレを失って保護され義足をつけたカメだ。またハンテンというカメもドライドックに入って体を温めてもらっている。

“We do dry dock when they’re ill, especially. So like the cold stuns, as we discussed. If we put them in water now, they would drown. So this is really something you do for a sick animal, and Hang Ten’s not sick.”　私たちは普段、カメが病気の時にこのドライドックを使うのです。コールドスタンで気絶してしまったカメの場合、水中に戻すと溺れ死んでしまうでしょうから、ドライドックに入れるわけです。病気のカメのための施設で、ハンテンは病気ではないんですが」

And as （　　11　　）, accustomed to an exact schedule, places like the employee bathroom and small tubs to keep warm is wearing on their mental and physical health.　習慣に支配された生き物で、決まったスケジュールに慣れているカメにとって、職員用のバスルームや小さなたらいで温められるのは、精神的にも肉体的にもこたえることだ。

これまでにも、水温が下がることでコールドスタン状態のカメが救助されることはあったそうです。例年は、「シータートル」のボランティアが数十匹のカメを救助し、シータートルの救助施設で温めていました。しかし、今回はスペースが全く足りず、島民に助けを求めて南パドレ島のコンベンションセンターに、昏睡状態のカメが何千と運び込まれたのです。自分たちも大変な停電の中、地域の人たちの努力には頭が下がります。しかし、カメたちは巨大な水槽の中で温められ、治療を受けなければ助からないかもしれないのです。一日も早く天候が回復し、電気の安定供給が戻ることを祈るばかりです。

保護団体「シータートル」には、アリソンと呼ばれているメスのカメがいます。2005年、捕食者に襲われ、ヒレを3本失った状態で南パドレ島に打ち上げられました。保護された後、海に戻すことができない状態なので、以来、「シータートル」のタンクの中で生きてきました。”義足”をつけて、タンクの中でなら泳ぐことができるようになっています。停電中でタンクの温度があげられない今、アリソンが普通の生活にもどるためにも、電力供給が必要なのです。

Knight says, staff and volunteers are doing their best to manage everything they can, trying to get these turtles warm and hopefully they’ll be able to release them back out into the water shortly. But the next big crisis is going to be these tanks. These giant tanks getting them back to their normal operating temperatures as you can see just a few moments ago, Allison, with her one good fin trying to claw her way out knowing that she needs to be back inside one of these to be safe.
