連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第97回です。7月3日に静岡県熱海市で起きた土石流は、甚大な被害を出しました。懸命の捜索・救助活動が行われています。オリンピックの開催が迫る時期に、比較的近い地域での災害のため、海外のニュースでも大きく取り上げられました。今日はオーストラリアのニュース映像で学びます。

Thousands are without power, at least 80 homes have been buried.　この男性はアパートに閉じ込められている。警察は外に出ないよう警告した。今週、日本の一部地域で豪雨が発生。災害が起きた一帯では、たった2日間で1か月分の雨が降った。東京から90キロ離れた熱海は、温泉地として知られているが、その一部が破壊された。数千人が停電し、少なくとも80軒の家が埋まっている。

“I saw on TV that my friend’s house was under the mud. I wanted to get there but was stopped by police.” The government is warning people there could （　　　6　　　）. Heavy rain is expected in the next few days. And （　7　） have already started.　「テレビで友人の家が泥の下敷きになっているのを見ました。そこに行きたかったのですが、警察に止められてしまいました」政府は、さらに多くの地滑りが起こる可能性があると警告している。 数日後には大雨が予報されており、避難はすでに始まっている。

■聴き取りの答えと解説

Helpless neighbors watched in horror as they filmed the unfolding disaster on their phones.

１．　wading through　 wade （川、ぬかるみの中などを）歩く、歩い　　　　て渡るという動詞の分詞形　wade through ～やっと切り抜ける

２．　a torrent of mud and debris　　名詞 torrent は、「激流、奔流」という意味で、自然災害の報道でよく登場する言葉。全体では「泥と瓦礫の激流」となります。

３．　unfolding　disaster を形容詞 unfolding が形容している形。unfold はもともと動詞で「展開する、広がる」という意味で、全体では「次々に広がっていく災害」となる。

６．　be more landslides　名詞 landslide は、「地すべり、山崩れ」という意味で、転じて「選挙などの圧勝」を指すこともある。

７．　evacuations　（名詞）避難、退避。この言葉も、災害のニュースではよく使われます。「evacuation drill 避難訓練」「evacuation center 避難所」「immediate evacuation order 緊急避難命令」なども覚えておきましょう。
