連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第98回です。2021年2月1日のクーデターからまもなく半年、ミャンマーでは今、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大が悪化しています。医療用酸素の不足が状況を悪化させており、ご遺体の火葬が間に合わないほどの非常事態です。命を救うために活動するボランティアの報告から学んでいきましょう。

１．　Authorities have failed　authority の複数形 authorities 当局、官憲　 cf. authorityが不可算名詞の場合は、「権威」「権力」となる。ここでは、「軍事政権は失敗している」という意味。

２．　bypassing authorities　他動詞 bypass には大きく分けてふたつの意味がある。①迂回する　②無視する　ここではふたつめの意味で、「当局を無視する」となる。

ミャンマーの軍事政権が発表する数よりも、相当大きな数の人命が失われているというアルジャジーラのニュースです。拘束されていた政治家、アウンサンスーチー氏の相談役であったNyan Win氏がコロナ感染し、亡くなったと報じています。自宅療養中に家族全員が亡くなってしまったケース、酸素ボンベを補充するため、軍による夜間外出禁止令を破って並んでいても、手に入れる前に家族が亡くなってしまったケースなどが報告されています。
