連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第102回です。2022年に予定されているフィリピンの大統領選に、プロボクシング元世界王者、マニー・パッキャオ上院議員が出馬を決めました。ドゥテルテ現大統領は憲法で再選が禁じられているため、パッキャオ氏が後継候補とみられていましたが、パッキャオ氏が現政権の批判をしたことで決裂。今回の動画は、ボクシングと選挙に関する表現を学べるニュースです。

フィリピンの大統領選が予定されているのは2022年5月。以前から出馬が噂されていたパッキャオ氏ですが、先日、与党「PDPラバン」の派閥会合で大統領候補指名を受諾しました。では、パッキャオ氏の簡単な紹介と、彼の言葉を聴いて、（ ）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（ ）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

■聴き取りの答えと解説

1． glittering （形容詞）キラキラ輝く、きらめく この形容詞は、宝石やネオンのような実際に光り輝くものを形容する場合と、「career 経歴」や「success成功」のような名詞を形容する場合があります。
2． is running for （句動詞）run for ～に立候補する cf. run は、「走る」という基本イメージから、「進行する」「流れる」「伝わる」など様々な自動詞としての意味があります。また他動詞として「立候補する」「運営する」といった意味があり、奥が深い動詞です。
3． faction （可算名詞）党派、派閥 cf. 不可算名詞の場合は「派閥争い」「内紛」といった意味になります。
