2020年5月25日、ミネソタ州ミネアポリスで、白人警官が黒人男性ジョージ・フロイドさんの首を膝で圧迫して殺害しました。これをきっかけに全米で激しい抗議行動がおこり、今も続いています。平和な「セサミストリート」で暮らすエルモは、なぜ人々が集まっているのか分らず、お父さんにききます。「抗議って何なの？ 人種差別って何？」

今日の動画は、抗議のために集まった人たちが、ある言葉を叫ぶニュース映像から始まります。みんなは何と叫んでいるのでしょうか？ そして、エルモはお父さんにどんな質問をしていますか？ （　　）の中を書き取ってください。

肌の色を理由に、人を不公平に扱うなんて、エルモには理解できないことでした。だって、エルモには、肌の色や毛皮の色が違う友だちが、セサミストリートにたくさんいるのですから。動画の最後の方でエルモのお父さんが言う言葉を書き取ってください。

全米で、そして世界各地で大きなうねりになっている Black Lives Matter ：黒人に対する暴力や差別の撤廃を訴える運動を、どのように日本語訳するのがをずっと考えています。「黒人の命も大切だ」という訳では、黒人、特に若い黒人男性への切迫した暴力と差別に対しての訴えを矮小化しているという批判がありました。また、SNS上に見られた White Lives Matter や All Lives Matter といった言葉が、Black Lives Matter という運動にかかわる人たちを分断してしまうという指摘は的を射ていると思います。Black Lives Matter と叫ぶとき、それは「黒人の命だけが大切だ」と言っているわけではなく、もちろん白人の命、ひいてはすべての命が大切なのは承知のうえで、同じように大事にされるべき黒人の命が、危険にさらされている現状を変えようという叫びなのです。

「黒人の命は大切だ。軽んじるな。黒人の命を守れ」というふうに言葉を重ねなければ Black Lives Matter が持っているニュアンスを伝える訳にはならないのだろうと思っているところです。

若干12歳のゴスペルシンガー、Keedron Bryant キードロン・ブライアントくんが歌う I just want to live は、彼のお母さんが書いたオリジナルソングです。『僕は若い黒人だ。毎日、僕のような黒人がどんな扱いを受けるか見ている。動物のように追いつめられるんだ。問題を起こそうなんて誰も思っていない。もう僕らは十分苦しんだ。ただ生きていたいだけなんだ、神様、守ってください。生きていたいだけなんだ』胸を締め付ける歌詞と切々と歌い上げる少年の声。あっという間に全米に広まった歌を聴いてください。
