連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第87回です。2021年1月20日に行われた米大統領就任式で話題をさらった詩人のアマンダ・ゴーマンさんが、エレン・デジェネレスさんのトーク番組「エレンの部屋」に登場した動画で学びましょう。オバマ前大統領夫妻とのやりとりなど、就任式での経験を軽妙に語ります。

アマンダさんが就任式で詩を朗読するように言われたときの様子を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

Amanda: I found out on December 30th. I basically had a Zoom call with the presidential （　1　） committee. And they （　　　2　　　　）of being （　1　） poet. Ellen: It’s dangerous to dance in your socks because they’re （　3　）. Be very careful when you dance in your socks. 　靴下で踊るのは危険ですよ、すべりやすいから。靴下で踊るときは十分注意してね。

もっと練習したかったけれど十分時間がとれなかったというアマンダさんに、エレンさんが問いかけます。「演壇にあがったとき、何を思って微笑んでいたの？」アマンダさんの答えを聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

Ellen: Just I mean you had the whole world watching you and you just were （　　　　4　　　　） And just it was, it was, I just, I didn’t know you but I was so proud because I can imagine what that moment was. When you arrived at the （　5　）, there was a – you smiled for a minute. What was that moment? What were you smiling about?　全世界があなたを見ていたわけだけど、あなたはとても穏やかで雄弁だった。私はあなたのことを知らなかったけど、それでもとても誇りに思いました。あの瞬間がどんなものが想像できたから。演壇に登ったとき、あなたは少しの間微笑んでいたでしょう。あの時はどうだったの？何に微笑んでいたの？

Amanda : Well, there’s this beautiful moment where I step up to the （　5　） and it’s in this incredible location where I can see the Washington Monument. I can also see the Lincoln Memorial all in my （　　6　　　）, and just feeling part of that history as the descendant of a slave. And I also smile because when I got up to the （　5　）, I heard people below, which you can’t really see, clapping for me. And it was just this really surprising moment that, wow, people are really excited to hear what I have to say, to hear poetry. What an opportunity for our country and the world. And so I kind of giggle to myself, and then （　　7　　）.　そうですね。演壇に上がったときは美しい瞬間で、そしてロケーションも信じられないほど素晴らしかったんです。ワシントン記念塔が見えるんですよ。それからリンカーン記念堂も視線の先にあります。奴隷の子孫として歴史の一部になったように感じていました。それから、演壇に上がると、みなさんからは見えない下の方にいる人たちが、拍手をしてくれているのが聞こえたんです。本当に驚きの瞬間で、「ワオ、みんな私が言わなければならないことを、つまり詩を、本当に聞きたいと思ってくれている」と感じました。私たちの国と世界にとってなんという機会なんだと思い、自分自身にちょっと笑いかけて、そして（詩の朗読を）始めたんです。

今回の『エレンの部屋』でのインタビューで一番面白かった部分です。オバマ前大統領夫妻とのやりとりをユーモラスに語るミランダさんの言葉を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

Amanda: And my mom kind of leaned in, and she （　　8　　） that’s A-Rod! And I （　　8　　） do you want to get a photo? She said, “Already done. Already did it.” And it was funny because I was there. And I remember Michelle Obama like being close and she kind of kept yelling at Barak, like stop hugging people, like stop （　　　　9　　　　） people. And then when I was done, she kind of like pushed him out the way, and gave me just the biggest, warmest Michelle Obama hug.　母が寄りかかってきて、こんなことを言いました。「あそこにいるの、A-Rod＊よ！」私が「写真撮りたいの？」と聞いたら、「もう撮ったわ」って。その場にいたからとても面白かったです。それから、ミシェル・オバマさんが近くにいらっしゃって、バラク・オバマさんに人と抱き合うのはやめなさいとか、人に近づくのはやめてと大きな声で呼びかけ続けていたのを覚えています。それなのに、私が詩を読み終えた後で、彼女はバラク・オバマさんを押しのけて私に、特大で一番温かいミシェル・オバマハグをしてくれました。

＊A-Rod ：米国の元プロ野球選手で、野球解説者のアレクサンダー・エマニュエル・ロドリゲス氏の愛称。婚約者のジェニファー・ロペス氏が、就任式で「This Land Is Your Land」「America the Beautiful」を歌った。

2021年2月7日（日本時間2月8日）に行われるアメリカンフットボールNFLの王座決定戦スーパーボールで、アマンダ・ゴーマンさんは詩を朗読します。コロナ禍でコミュニティに貢献した教師、看護師、退役軍人を称えるオリジナルの詩を披露するそうです。楽しみです。タイムの表紙も飾ったアマンダさん、これからもますます注目され、活躍の場を広げていくことでしょう。

■聴き取りの答えと解説

Ellen: When did you find out that you were going to write the inaugural poem?

Amanda: I found out on December 30th. I basically had a Zoom call with the presidential inaugural committee. And they offered me the role of being inaugural poet. And I screamed and I danced in my socks and it was just an amazing night.

Ellen: It’s dangerous to dance in your socks because they’re slippery. Be very careful when you dance in your socks.

1　inaugural （形容詞）　ここでは「就任式の」という意味の形容詞として、poem, committee, poet という名詞を修飾しています。

2　offered me the role 　offer（他動詞）は、間接目的語と直接目的語を従えて第4文型に使える動詞なので、ここでは、me:私に（関節目的語）the role: 役割（直接目的語）で S+V+O+O の文章になっています。They offered the role to me と言い換えることもできます。

3　slippery（形容詞）つるつるした、すべる　

Ellen: Just I mean you had the whole world watching you and you just were so calm and eloquent. And just it was, it was, I just, I didn’t know you but I was so proud because I can imagine what that moment was. When you arrived at the podium, there was a ? you smiled for a minute. What was that moment? What were you smiling about?

Amanda : Well, there’s this beautiful moment where I step up to the podium and it’s in this incredible location where I can see the Washington Monument. 4　so calm and eloquent calm（形容詞）穏やかな、平静な、落ち着いた　 eloquent （形容詞）雄弁な、能弁な、よく表している

5　podium（名詞）演壇、指揮台　自動詞として使うと、「演壇に上がる」という意味になります。cf. She podiumed calmly. 　彼女は落ち着いて演壇に上がった。

6　line of vision 　視線　＝　line of sight 　in my line of vision　私の詩視線の先にある

7　got going　get going「前進する、出発する」という語句の過去形　cf. Let’s get going さあ、始めましょう。

8　was like 　誰かが言ったことを自分が言うとき、例えばHe said “●●”　というふうにも言えますし、She told me that ●●　のようにも言えます。もうひとつの方法として、be動詞＋前置詞like を使って、その人のセリフを言うこともできるのです。カジュアルな言い方です。この部分では、『…she was like that’s A-Rod! 　彼女（母）が、あそこにいるの、A-Rodよ！と言ったんです』『I was like do you want to get a photo? 私は、写真撮りたい？と聞きました』というふうに訳せるわけです。

9　getting close to 　close（形容詞）接近した、近い　cf. get close 近づく、ひっつく　『stop getting close to people 　人に近づくのはやめて』というふうに訳せます。

■アマンダ・ゴードンさんCNNインタビュー動画の一部解説

筆者が尊敬するインタビュアーでジャーナリストのアンダーソン・クーパーさんが、アマンダさんの詩に感動してインタビューをした動画を紹介します。その中で、詩を朗読する前の緊張の時、アマンダさんが祈りのように口ずさむ言葉を紹介していました。それがとても素敵だったのでご紹介します。

Anderson Cooper : I understand you have a mantra that you say before every reading you give. Can you reveal what that is ? 　あなたには、詩を読む前に必ず唱える言葉があるそうですね。どんなものなのか披露してもらえますか？

Amanda Gorman : Certainly. I do whenever I perform and I definitely did it this time. And I close my eyes and I say, “I am the daughter of Black writers. We are descended from freedom fighters who broke their chains and changed the world. They call me” 　承知しました。詩を読む前は必ず言いますし、今回ももちろん唱えたんです。目を閉じてこう言います。「私は黒人の作家たちの娘。私たちは、鎖を断ち切り、世界を変えた自由の戦士の子孫。彼らが私を呼んでいる」と。

Cooper : Wow, you’re just, you’re awesome. I’m so transfixed.　あなたは、なんて…本当に素晴らしい。魔法にかけられたみたいだ。
