2019年7月に始まった香港のデモはまだ収束する気配がありません。そんな中、『I had to do something：何かしないわけにはいかなかった』と、海外からやってきたデモ参加者がいます。今日は彼らの言葉で勉強しましょう。

テキサスからやってきたベンの言葉を聴いて（　　　）の中を書き取ってください。この動画は字幕がついているので、そちらは見ずに、英語を耳で確認してください。

I’ve been watching the protests for months. It was really ( 3 ) . It was easy for me to relate to. They were Asian people under a Western system and just faced with this ( 4 ) authoritarianism and bravely fighting back. And I thought to myself all that time, you know, I wish I was over there. I’m half Vietnamese and half Hong Konger. My mom is Vietnamese. She fled Vietnam after South Vietnam fell from the Communist Party and so already being first-hand a product of communist rule in Vietnam. The fact that I’m in the United States is a direct cause of that. One of my friends said, ” You’re not gonna make a big difference by ( 7 ) there” And it’s probably true that you know if I was removed from the equation, and things would be pretty much the same. But maybe a hundred ( 8 ) or a thousand ( 8 ) would make a difference and that’s what I want to try and be a part of.　ある友だちが言いました。「君がそこに行ったって大した違いはないよ」多分、そうなんだろうと思う。僕がそこにいてもいなくてもほとんど同じ。でも、百人の”僕”が、あるいは千人の”僕”がいたら、変化が起きると思うし、そうしたい、その一員でありたい。

日本では、海外での大きな事件や事故が、その時だけ報道され、すぐに忘れさられます。歴史的な背景や、点と点を結ぶ線が見えません。でも、今はYouTubeで、世界のニュース動画を24時間いつでも見ることができます。お勧めの勉強方法は、ひとつテーマを決めて、1ヵ月ほど、そのテーマの動画や記事を読んだり聴いたりすることです。Hong Kong demonstration などでYouTubeを検索し、アップロード日を「今月」や「今週」と指示してフィルターをかければ、いろいろな新しい動画が出てきます。4~5本見れば、使われている単語や表現に慣れ、次のYouTubeでは聴きとりが楽になって、単語も背景知識も自然に身についてくるでしょう。

■聴き取りの答えと解説

1 originally （副）もともとは、本来は　cf. He’ s originally from Manila. 彼はもともとマニラ出身なんです。

2. descent（名）家系、系統　cf. descent には「降りる」「下降」という意味があり、～の系統の、～の血を引くといった意味で使われます。また、子孫はdescendant 、祖先はancestor と言います。
