連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第83回です。今日は、英国ではじまった新型コロナウイルスのワクチン接種のニュースを使って学んでいきましょう。最初の接種を受けるのは、どんな人たちでしょうか？ 接種をした人は、どんな言葉を発したのでしょうか？

2020年12月8日、英国で新型コロナウイルスのワクチン接種がはじまりました。最初に接種を受けた人は、もうすぐ91歳になるという女性、マーガレット・キーナンさんです。マーガレットさんの言葉を含むニュースの最初の部分を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）にひとつの単語とは限りません。

では、自身もコロナウイルスに感染した経験者でもあるボリス・ジョンソン首相の言葉を聴いてみましょう。

The British government’s called this V-for-vaccine day but the prime minister warned it’s too early to call this V for victory. “In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and in England, people are having the vaccine for the first time and it will （　6　 ） make a huge, huge difference but I stress （　6　 ）because you know we’re not there yet. ＊第二次世界大戦において、連合国がドイツを降伏させた日として、Victory in Europe Day = VE Day ヨーロッパ戦勝記念日（1945年5月8日）があります。そこからも、VはVictoryのVというのが一般的な印象です。2020年12月8日はあくまでVaccine ワクチンのVのVデーで、まだ勝利のVデーではないというのが、ジョンソン首相の言いたかったことです。

カナダの公共放送局CBCの国際ニュース部門CBC News The National で取り上げられていた英国のワクチン接種ニュースの動画を紹介します。一部分ですが、スクリプトと私訳をつけておきます。

At age 90, Margaret Keenan didn’t expect she’d be making history. Their vaccination was just the first today. Across the UK, thousands were vaccinated. From Glasgow in the north all the way to Portsmouth in the south. The first to be called, those who live in working care homes, frontline health workers, and seniors over 80.　90歳にして歴史に名を残すことになるとは、マーガレット・キーナンさんは思ってもいませんでした。英国中で、何千人という人がワクチンを接種されました。北はグラスゴーから、南はポーツマスまで。最初に連絡を受けたのは、介護施設で暮らしている人たち、前線で働いている医療関係者、そして80歳以上の高齢者の方々です。
