現在、英国首相であるボリス・ジョンソン氏は新型コロナウイルスに感染し、入院中です。集中治療室に入ったという情報もある中、英国民に呼びかけたのは、94歳になるエリザベス女王でした。防護服を着たカメラマンによってウインザー城で録画されたスピーチです。（※4月10日、英国のジョンソン首相は集中治療室を出て、一般病棟に戻ったということです）

The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud its care and essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit.  And it’s symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children. 　連合王国がひとつになり、医療や介護に従事する人々や不可欠な仕事を行っている人々に拍手を送ったことは、この国の精神を表したものとして記憶に残ることでしょう。その精神のシンボルは、子どもたちが描いた虹です。

Across the Commonwealth and around the world, we have seen heartwarming stories of people coming together to help others.  Be it through delivering food, parcels and medicines,  checking on neighbors or converting businesses to help the relief effort. 　英連邦と世界の各地で、心温まる助け合いが行われています。食べ物や荷物、薬を届けたり、近所の人たちが声をかけあったり、救援活動を応援するために事業内容を変更したりという助け合いです。

And those self isolating may at times be hard.  Many people of all faiths and of none are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause and reflect in prayer or meditation. 　自主的な隔離は時につらいものです。信仰を持つ人も持たない人も、これは、生活のペースを落とし、祈りや瞑想をして自らを振り返る機会なのだと気付いている人がたくさんいます。

It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made in 1940 helped by my sister.   We as children spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety. 　私が初めて国民に向けて話をした1940年の放送を思い出しています。妹が手伝ってくれました。私たちは子どもでしたから、このウインザー城から、安全のために家から離れて疎開させられた子どもたちに語りかけたのです。

Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now as then we know deep down that it is the right thing to do.  今日、また、多くの人たちが愛する人と離れる痛みを感じることでしょう。しかし、今も当時も、私たちは心の奥で、これが正しいことだと承知しています。
