連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第76回です。2020年7月末、インド洋の島国モーリシャスの沖合で、日本の商船三井が運航する貨物船が座礁。重油が流出した事故について伝えるニュース動画で学んでいきましょう。

モーリシャス共和国は、インド洋のサンゴ礁に囲まれた島国で、サトウキビを中心とする農業以外に、漁業と観光業が主要産業となっています。今回の重油流出で美しい海が汚染されたことで、特に漁業と観光は大打撃を受けています。なんとか被害を最小限に食い止めようと、クリーンアップ作戦に取り組んでいる人たちの声を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。

では、続いて、トロント大学のミリアム・ダイアモンドさんの言葉を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（　　）の中にひとつの単語とは限りません。ここでは12個の単語が使われています。

カナダに暮らしているモーリシャス出身者たちも力を合わせ、自分たちの出来ることをやろうとしています。パメラさんの話を聴いて、（　　）の中を書き取ってください。

Here in Canada the Mauritian community has been watching the situation closely.  “We feel is that we are helpless because we’re very far away but our heart is still there”  Community members are working to （　7　） funds to send a skimmer, equipment that removes oil off the water surface.  “We do think that it’s going to get better. Maybe not six months from now, maybe a year or （　8　） but we’re going to come out together out of this.”　ここカナダでは、モーリシャス出身者のコミュニティも、この状況を注視している。「私たちはあまりに遠く離れてしまっているので、無力感におそわれています。でも、私たちの心はまだモーリシャスにあります」コミュニティのメンバーは、スキマー（水面から油を除去する装置）を送るための資金調達に取り組んでいる。「事態は良くなっていくと思っています。6か月では無理かもしれない。1年か2年かかるかもしれないけど、力を合わせればこの状況から脱出できると思うのです」

1．efforts　（名詞）努力、奮闘、骨折りといった意味がある単語。そこから、ある目的のための「運動」という意味にもなり、長時間にわたって行われるハードな「活動」とも解釈できる。cf. clean up efforts 厄介な清掃作業

2．helpless　（形容詞）無力な、ふがいのない、手の施しようがない

3．booms　（名詞）ここでは、いわゆるブーム（急上昇、急発展）という言葉ではなく、「オイルフェンス」という意味の言葉。 cf. oil-spill containment boom, oil boom, oil fence

4．cane  （名詞）茎、ステッキ      ここでは、sugar cane　サトウキビ

こちらの動画には英語の音声は入っていませんが、この重油流出の酷さがよく分る動画になっています。ひとつ単語を解説すると、タイトルに使われているfootage です。日本語では、動画、映像という意味の言葉なんですが、movie /video は完成した映像全部を指し、interchangeable （交換できる）です。footage の方は、movie/video の一部や未加工の映像を指すことが多く、記録映像やニュース映像を指すことも多いです。
