連載「YouTubeで学ぶ英語」の第79回は、ニュージーランドの議員が2013年におこなった演説をとりあげます。同性婚を認める法案が同国で提出されたとき、反対する人に向けておこなわれた演説は、big gay rainbow スピーチと呼ばれています。ユーモラスで知性にあふれた、今こそよく味わいたい言葉をぜひどうぞ。

先日、「LだってGだって法律で守られてるじゃないかなんていうような話になったんでは、足立区は滅んでしまう」（足立区議会・本会議録画配信より）などという自民党区議の発言がありました。議員という立場での差別的なスピーチは許されるものではありませんが、似たような偏見や無知からくる誤解は、残念ながらまだいろいろなところで見聞きします。そこで、2013年に同性婚を認める法案が提出されたときに、モーリス・ウイリアムソン議員が反対する人にむけておこない、称賛を受けたスピーチを紹介したいと思った次第です。演説の核心部分の始まりを聴いて、（ ）の中を書き取ってください。
Let me repeat to them now sir, all we are doing with this bill is allowing two people who love each other to have that love （ 1 ） by way of （ 2 ） That is all we are doing. 繰り返しになりますが、この法案は、愛し合うふたりが、結婚という形でその愛を認められるようにするものです。私たちがしようとしているのは、それだけのことなのです。
『この法案を通すなら、お前は永遠の業火で焼かれるだろう』という手紙を受け取ったウイリアムソン議員は、しかし、ほとんどの反対意見は穏健派の人たちからのものだったと言います。自分たちの暮らしになにか大きな影響があるのではないかと心配しているからで、「その心配は尊重したい」と語りました。「その気持ちは分かるけれど、大丈夫ですよ」と言葉を続けます。世界中が称賛したスピーチの続きを聴いて、（ ）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（ ）にひとつの単語とは限りません。
We are not （ 3 ） nuclear war on a foreign State. We are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agricultural sector forever. We are allowing two people who love each other to have that recognized, and I can’t see what’s wrong with that （ 4 ） So I just cannot, I cannot understand why someone would be opposed. I understand why people don’t like what it is that others do, that’s fine. We are all in that category. But I give a promise to those people who are opposed to this bill right now. I give you a （ 5 ） guaranteed promise. The sun will still rise tomorrow. 外国に核戦争を宣言しようってわけではないんです。農業部門を永久に壊滅させるようなウイルスを持ち込むわけでもありません。互いに愛し合っているふたりの愛を認めようというだけなんです。それのどこが悪いのが全くわかりません。なぜ反対する人がいるのか、理解できません。他の人がしていることが気に入らない人たちがいるのは理解できます。私たちは皆、そんなところがありますよね。しかし、この法案に反対する人に約束します。水ももらさぬ保証付きの約束です。明日も太陽は登ります。
「水ももらさぬ」保証付きの約束が、この後もユーモラスに続きます。よく聴いて、（ ）の中を書き取ってください。ひとつの（ ）にひとつの単語とは限りません。
Your teenage daughter will still argue back with you （ 6 ） Your mortgage will not grow. You will not have skin diseases or rashes, or toads in your bed, sir. The world will just carry on. So don’t make this into a big deal. This is fantastic for the people it affects, but for the rest of us, （ 7 ）あなたの10代の娘さんは、やっぱりあなたに反論してくるでしょう。何でも知ってるかのようにね。住宅ローンが増えたりもしません。皮膚病になったり、吹き出物ができたりしません。ヒキガエルがベッドにいたりもしません。世界はただ続いていくのです。大さわぎをする必要はないんです。この法案は、影響を受ける人たちにとっては素晴らしいものですが、関係ない人たちにとっては、人生が続くというだけのことです。
同性婚を認める法案が通ることで、神の怒りに触れるのではないかというキリスト教徒に向けて、聖書の『出エジプト記』にある災い～蛙が大量発生したり、腫れものができたりする～を意識した内容になっています。こんなところも、ユーモアと同時に知性と教養がにじみ出ていますね。では、このスピーチが’big gay rainbow’ スピーチと呼ばれる所以となった個所を聴いて、（ ）の中を書き取ってください。

It has to be a sign, sir. 最後に言わせてください。私が受け取ったメッセージのひとつに、「この法案が干ばつの原因だ」というものがありました。この法案が干ばつの原因だと！私のTwitterをフォローしてくれている方はご存じでしょう。パクランガ選挙区では、今朝、雨が降りました。そして、選挙区全体に巨大な、素晴らしいゲイの虹がかかっていたんです。これは「印」に違いありません。
よく知られているLGBTQの象徴「レインボーフラッグ」と、ノアの洪水の後、神様と人間との和解の印として現れた最初の虹。このふたつを掛けた素晴らしいレトリックで見事に締めくくられたbig gay rainbowスピーチでした。知性とユーモア、他者への共感と理解。このような政治家がいる国、このような演説が聴ける国、ニュージーランドが心底うらやましいと思いました。日本にもゲイの虹がかかる日を願ってやみません。
