YouTubeで学ぶ英語、2回目はTEDのスピーチを使って勉強しましょう。TEDは、「ideas worth spreading 広める価値のあるアイデア」を世界中の人に伝えることを目的に、世界的な規模の講演会を主催している非営利団体です。素晴らしいスピーチが無料で公開されているので、英語の勉強にはもってこいです。とはいえ、最先端の技術や、最新の研究や、一流のエンターテインメントなど、各分野のトップクラスのスピーカーが練り上げたスピーチですから、歯ごたえは十分あります。一緒に勉強して消化し、自分のものとなるようにがんばりましょう。

企業家で、音楽家でもあるDerek Sivers さんは滑舌がよく、よく通る声の持ち主。練り上げられた分かりやすいスピーチをするので、TEDでも人気のスピーカーなのです。特に今回取り上げる「How to start a movement ムーブメントの始め方」は、軽妙な語り口ながら感動的な内容で、筆者も何度か英語の授業で使っています。約3分の短さなのも、いいですね。最初に一番言いたいことをはっきりと述べています。（　　　）の中を聞き取ってください。

Ladies and gentlemen, / at TED / we talk a lot / about leadership / and how to make a movement./ So let’s watch a movement ( 1 ),/ start to finish, /in under three minutes /and ( 2 ) some lessons /from it./

1 happen 　　　　So let’s watch a movement happen は、watch +目的語+動詞の原形「～が・・・するのを見る」　という意味になります。「movementがhappenするのを見よう→ムーブメントが起こるところを見よう」となります。

2 dissect 　　　　　「解体する」「分解する」　「詳細に吟味する」　という意味の他動詞です。名詞はdissection 「解剖」という意味があります。「そこからlessonを切り出しましょう」→「そこから教訓を引き出しましょう」となります。　dissect の発音は「ディセクト」でも「ダイセクト」でもOKですが、Derekさんは「ダイセクト」と発音し、前にand があるので　 and dissect some lessons 最後のdが一緒になって聞き取りを難しくしています。

全体の意味は「みなさんこんにちは/　TEDでは/　よく話し合われます/　リーダーシップについて/　それからムーブメントの起こし方について/ではムーブメントが起きるところを見ましょう/　最初から最後まで/　3分もかかりません/　そしていくつかの教訓を引き出しましょう　/そこから」となります。

リーダーというのは、この動画では最初にたったひとりで踊っている上半身裸の人のことです。Derekさんは、「リーダーにはひとりで目立って注目を浴びる勇気と、もうひとつ〇〇が必要」と言っています。何が必要なのでしょうか？ヒントは受動態。

First, / of course you know,/ a leader needs the guts / to stand out / and be ridiculed. / 最初に/　もちろんお分かりでしょうが/　リーダーは(次のことに耐える）/勇気が要ります/　目立つことと/嘲笑されること

ridicule は、「嘲る、冷笑する」という意味の他動詞です。リーダーには「be ridiculed 笑われても」、そこでstand out するguts が要るのですね。

たったひとりで、人から注目を浴びて、「なにバカなことやってんだ」という視線に耐えるリーダーのところに、一人のfollower (追随者・信奉者）がやってきました。この最初のfollower こそ、大きな役割を果たしているのです。他の人たちに、こうやってfollowしたらいいんだよ、とお手本を見せています。リーダーがfollowerを平等に扱うところを見てください。もうリーダーはひとりではありません。ひとりのleaderと最初の followerで複数です。Derekさんは、この最初のfollower は、あまり評価を受けていませんが、リーダーシップのひとつの形であると話しています。こんな風に一緒になって目立つことだって、相当の勇気が要ります。それから、もうひとつなんと言っているでしょう。（　　　　）の中を聞き取ってください。

Now, / if you notice /that the first follower is / actually an underestimated form / of leadership in itself/. It takes guts /to stand out /like that. /

The first follower is what transforms a( 1 ) ( 2 ) into a leader.

1　lone 形容詞　「孤独な　周りに誰もいない」

「孤独な」という形容詞で思い出されるのは alone という形容詞ですが lone と違ってalone は叙述用法だけに使える形容詞なので、名詞の前に出て修飾することが出来ないのです。たとえば I am alone という風に主語の補語として使用することしか出来ません。

このような形でしか用いられない形容詞の代表的なものは　afraid asleep alive などの a-で始まる形容詞です。　He seems afraid. The child is asleep のように使い、「×afraid man 怖がっている男」「×asleep child 眠っている子ども」のような使い方は出来ないのです。

lone は逆に補語としては使えず、名詞を直接形容することしか出来ない限定用法の形容詞です。 lone wolf 一匹狼、とは言えますが、「× a wolf is lone 狼は孤独だ」とは言えないのです。普通の形容詞はどちらでも使えるのですが、たまに、決まった形でしか使えない形容詞があります。lone の仲間にはdrunken elder previous などがあります。　　a drunken man とは言えますが　He is drunken は×　　my elder sister は〇でShe is my elder は×です。

2　nut 名詞　　「変わり者」　木の実のナッツもこれですが、スラングでnut というと、「変わったやつ」、「頭のおかしい人」「何かにすごく夢中になっている人」という意味になります。

最後の1行を訳すと、「この最初のfollowerこそ、孤独な変わり者をリーダーに変えたのです」となります。

ここからは第二、第三のfollower がやってきて、だんだん集団になっていき、このmovementはpublicになっていくと語られます。弾みがついて、どんどん人がやってきて大きな集団になります。もう立ち上がって参加することに笑われるリスクはなく、むしろ参加しない方が笑われそうな勢いです。「これが、movementの起こし方です」とDerekさん。ではその部分を聞いて下さい。

Now, / here come two more people, /and immediately after,/ three more people./ Now we’ve got momentum. /This is the tipping point. /Now we’ve got a movement./ So, /notice that,/ as more people join in,/ it’s less risky./ So those /that were sitting on the fence before /now have no reason not to. /They won’t stand out,/ they won’t be ridiculed, /but they will be part of the in-crowd /if they hurry. /So, /over the next minute, /you’ll see all of those /that prefer to stick with the crowd /because eventually they would be ridiculed /for not joining in./ And that’s /how you make a movement./

最後にDerekさんはこの動画からふたつの教訓をもう一度まとめておさらいしてくれます。ひとつは、もしあなたが最初に立ち上がって踊るタイプなら、followerを大切に平等に扱うことを忘れるなということ。大事なのは自分じゃなくて、movementだからです。

そして最も大事なlessonは、（　　　　　）の中を埋めながらもう一度味わって聞いてくださいね。

Now, notice that the leader embraces him as an equal. Now it’s not about the leader anymore; it’s about them, plural. Now, there he is calling to his friends. Now, if you notice that the first follower is actually an underestimated form of leadership in itself. It takes guts to stand out like that. The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader. (Laughter) (Applause)

And here comes a second follower. Now it’s not a lone nut, it’s not two nuts — three is a crowd, and a crowd is news. So a movement must be public. It’s important to show not just the leader, but the followers, because you find that new followers emulate the followers, not the leader.

Now, here come two more people, and immediately after, three more people. Now we’ve got momentum. This is the tipping point. Now we’ve got a movement. (Laughter) So, notice that, as more people join in,it’s less risky. So those that were sitting on the fence before now have no reason not to. They won’t stand out, they won’t be ridiculed, but they will be part of the in-crowd if they hurry. (Laughter) So, over the next minute, you’ll see all of those that prefer to stick with the crowd because eventually they would be ridiculed for not joining in. And that’s how you make a movement.

But let’s recap some lessons from this. So first, if you are the type, like the shirtless dancing guy that is standing alone, remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals so it’s clearly about the movement, not you. (Laughter) Okay, but we might have missed the real lesson here.
